Where I've Been

I was born in Lodz - Poland.  I grew up in Olsztyn (Allenstein in Est Prussia).  The City came to existence in the beginning of XIV century.  From 1516 to 1521 in the Castle lived Nicolaus Copernicus, who left there on the wall his astronomical table on which he observed and recorded spring and autumn equinox.  This is the only one of his authentic instruments preserved as historical documentation of his works.  The others of interesting historical sites are the gothic Cathedral church of St. Jacob and one of the city gates from the XIV century.

I Left Poland 21 years ago to go to Scotland for a long Vacation.  I have stayed there for seven years.  In May 1986 I came to live in Chicago and in 89 I moved to Brooklyn, NY.  For a while I worked as a housekeeper/companion for an older wealthy lady with whom I traveled to Switzerland and Spain.  I flew couple of times over Iceland, but I only saw an airport.  I think that is one of the places that I would like to go for vacation some time.  When I was working as a nanny for two little boys I went, for their winter vacation with their parents, to St. Martin - a lovely Caribbean island.  I have travel to Grand Bahama Island twice - loved it, especially in the winter!  And before I left Poland I hitchhiked  through the "eastern block" countries and went once to Soviet Union with the theater troupe. :))

My Life as an Educator

I graduated from Teacher's Training College in Olsztyn - Poland.  After school I taught Physical Education and couple of other subjects in ZSG Milakowo (another old place, but much smaller) for four years.  I was an official class teacher there and stayed with the same children from grade 5 to 8.  That is why I was so surprised to find out that as a PE teacher I can not be an official class teacher.  I like to teach gymnastics, dance, aerobics and volleyball but most of all I like teaching swimming.  Our school does not have a swimming pool but I teach children at the Kings bay "Y".
Apart of being PE teacher I am interested in publishing. For the last few years I was also a yearbook and school newsletter advisor/editor.  I started a new publication EBBETS FIELD when I came to work at Jackie Robinson Middle School 320 in September 1999. School was located where real Ebbets Field used to be. Jackie Robinson and Ebbets Field  That school is closed now. BOE decided to redesign that building and change population of the school. From September 2001 I am back in District 23 in Brooklyn. The first issue of I.S. 55 Voice came out just before Christmas holidays. Two more in 2002 followed. If you want to see them you can visit http://www.nycenet.edu/csd23/schlpgs/55/pages/newspaper.htm

When I'm Not Working...

When I am not working I like to bike, exercise and garden.  I also design and make my own clothes (nothing fancy) mostly stretch pants and swim wear.  Occasionally I make costumes for my friend - dance teacher, when she is choreographing a new dance.
For my Spring Vacation I regularly drive to St. Augustine, Florida.  This is my very favorite place in the United States.  It is the oldest city in the whole North America.  I usually go there with my mother.  We are staying always in the same motel Travelodge:  http://www.the.travelodge.com/staugustine10873?sid=AAA8KHACwAAAAZLAAG and enjoy long walks, beaches and site seeing.  My mother always brings some air plants, which are then sitting on my porch until they die in the winter.  She took some for her friends in Poland and believe it or not, they are still alive indoors at her friends houses.

I have two cats:  Kicia and Grysia.  They are both neutered females.  Kicia came with me from Brooklyn (my last rented apartment) to my new house on Staten Island.  She was an alley kitten there.  Grysia came about 18 months later from my friends home.  She was seven weeks old and adorable.
For my Summer vacations I usually go to Poland.  I love to be with my siblings (my sister - Urszula and my brother Stan).  They are both very interesting people.  Urszula teaches English, translates from and to couple languages and designs web pages too.  My brother is an artist.  He works with wood.  He carves it, turns it and makes boats.  He is also a poet.  (One of his canoes you can view above.)
